Tab: Communication Settings

The settings for the communication of the CODESYS Safety Extension development system with the safety PLC are configured on the Communication Settings tab of the safety PLC editor.

For the successful establishment of a connection to the safety PLC, a network connection must be established and subsequently confirmed.

Important

CODESYS provides two alternative views of the communication settings. The new graphical view is not approved for use with CODESYS Safety Extension. Before you open the Communication Settings tab, you need to activate the Use classic display of the communication settings option in the Tools → Options → Device editor dialog.

Network connection

The safety PLC behaves like a standard controller in the communication tree. Depending on the system architecture it is displayed as the top level or as a child of another controller. The procedure for network connection corresponds to the procedure in CODESYS Standard (Network connection). If the safety PLC is selected in the communication tree, then the information for it is displayed in the area next to the communication tree as for a standard controller.

CODESYS Safety Extension also requires a connection confirmation for successful connection to the safety PLC.

Change device name

This command is available in the communication tree in the context menu of the device entries. For more information, see: Change device name.

The device name is a name assigned by developers for a controller in their network. They use it for identifying the safety PLC in write commands.

Caution

Unique device names must be assigned for the safety PLCs in the network.

The developer is always responsible for ensuring that each command goes to the correct controller.

Procedure. Changing the device name
  1. Open the Communication Settings tab.

  2. Select the gateway.

  3. Click the Scan Network button.

  4. Select the node.

  5. In the context menu, click Change device name.

  6. In the Connection to safety controller dialog, enter a new, unique name.

  7. In the Connection to safety controller dialog, perform the action on the safety PLC described or specify the controller instance ID (Instance identification).

  8. Click the OK button.

The name of the controller (device name) is not stored in the project, but on the safety PLC.
